Wilfred Burchett’s The Atomic Plague is often referred to as the scoop of the century. He was the first correspondent to enter the city of Hiroshima after the bombing, arriving with the first wave of US Marines on the USS Millett that landed in Japan on August 14, 1945. In Hiroshima, 30 days after the first atomic bomb destroyed the city and shook the world, people are still dying, mysteriously and horribly - people who were uninjured by the cataclysm - from an unknown something which I can only describe as atomic plague. Hiroshima does not look like a bombed city. It looks as if a monster steamroller had passed over it and squashed it out of existence.

Prior to that Leo Szilard had patented the concept of a nuclear chain reaction in 1933, but he had not conceived of fission as the means to create further nuetrons in a chain reaction (since the idea of fission was simply not imagined in advance of its discovery - for once, the applied physicists were in advance of theoretical phsicists, and only Meitner was.

The most common form of plague is bubonic plague. It’s usually contracted when an infected rodent or flea bites you. In very rare cases, you can get the bacteria from material that has come into contact with an infected person. Bubonic plague infects your lymphatic system (a part of the immune system), causing inflammation in your lymph nodes. Untreated, it can move into the blood (causing septicemic plague) or to the lungs (causing pneumonic plague). When the bacteria enter the bloodstream directly and multiply there, it’s known as septicemic plague.
