The Ku Klux Klan (/ˈkuː ˈklʌks ˈklæn, ˈkjuː/), commonly called the KKK or the Klan, is an American white supremacist hate group. The Klan has existed in three distinct eras at different points in time during the history of the United States. Each has advocated extremist reactionary positions such as white nationalism, anti-immigration and-especially in later and anti-Catholicism.

The Klan was getting out of control, and Congress passed a Ku Klux Klan Act in 1871. By the end of 1872, the federal crackdown had broken the back of the KKK. Because of the restriction and the Act passed violence was isolated but still continued. The KKK was dead, and Reconstruction lived on in southern legend. This would not be the last of the KKK. On the night of Thanksgiving in 1915, sixteen men from Atlanta, Georgia climbed to the top of Stone Mountain and built an altar of stones on which they placed an American flag

Ultimately, the intended purpose and function of the Ku Klux Klan is for Whites in Western countries to get angry at the symptoms of multiculturalism, not the disease. Though his war against the South was brutal and destructive, Lincoln’s post war policy towards the defeated states was to have been one of reconciliation and rebuilding. With his sudden death however, a radical faction within the Republican Party, known as the Radical Republicans, are free to abuse and punish the southern states for their attempt at succession.

The National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is a Klan faction that has been around since November 1963. In the sixties, the National Knights were the main competitors against Robert Shelton's United Klans of America. The National Knights were founded by James Venable, a second generation Klansmen whose family owned the property on Stone Mountain where the Second Era Ku Klux Klan was founded

Ku Klux Klan members in United States politics. This is a partial list of a few notable figures in . national politics who were members of the Ku Klux Klan before taking office. Membership was secret. Sometimes political opponents might allege that a person was a member, or was supported at the polls by Klan members.

The first efforts to revive the Ku Klux Klan after World War II were unsuccessful. Dr. Samuel Green of Georgia led attempts to reorganize the Klan and even succeeded in several states, but the Klan splintered and many states adopted specific anti-Klan legislation. As a reaction to growth of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s, several groups describing themselves as Klans rose in the South, although there was never the unified structure that characterized either of the first two Klan organizations. The Klan has not entirely disappeared. Though currently suffering its worst decline since the 1940s, America's oldest hate group continues to operate on a local level, in some instances still participating in illegal acts of violence and intimidation. Local Klan factions active today are based in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Texas, and Michigan.

Herbert Wallace Butterworth also Wally Butterworth and Wallace Butterworth (October 25, 1901 - February 24, 1974) was a radio announcer and publicist for two Ku Klux Klan organizations in the 1960s. He was the publisher of the United Klans of America publication The Fiery Cross.
