Back in the High Life is the fourth solo studio album by English rock musician Steve Winwood. Released in 1986, it was a top ten hit on the album charts in the United States, peaking at and has sold over five million copies. The single "Higher Love" topped the singles chart and won the Grammy Award for "Record of the Year"; "Back in the High Life Again" (US "The Finer Things" (US the second biggest hit from the album), and "Freedom Overspill" (US were also big hits.
Steve Winwood was indeed enjoying the high life after the release of this album in 1986. Back in the High Life is one of the best albums of that musically rich decade, providing Winwood with four huge hit singles. Winwood almost became too popular as a result of these songs; the radio played Higher Love, The Finer Things, Freedom Overspill, and Back in the High Life Again so often that even I eventually began to grow tired of them. As a result, I can say that I enjoy this album even more today than I did at the time of its initial release.
His distinctive blue-eyed soul vocals are, naturally, at the front of the mix as well
High life High life In the high life again. We'll be back in the high life again All the doors I closed one time Will open up again We'll be back in the high life again All the eyes that watched us once Will smile and take us in. And we'll drink and dance with one hand free And have the world so easily And oh we'll be a sight to see Back in the high life again. High life Back in the high life Oh, we'll be back. About Back in the High Life Again. Back in the High Life Again was the title song of Steve Winwood’s 1986 album. Written By Will Jennings & Steve Winwood. Backing Vocals James Taylor. Release Date January 1, 1986. Back in the High Life Steve Winwood.

There are literally no weak points to this fantastic work. The truly great artists are more than the sum of their hit singles. You get mega hits like "Higher Love" and "Back in the High Life Again", however there are also gems like "Freedom Overspill" and the heartfelt, "My Love's Leavin", that are no less great. Nice rhythmic bluesy sound and beat, yet very uplifting music. Thanks, Steve for your great music!
Four years later Steve Winwood resurfaced with the mega-smash Back in the High Life. While not as warm sounding as his preceding solo albums, Back in the High Life was wildly more successful. Enlisting a who’s who of music, including Chaka Khan, James Taylor, Joe Walsh and Niles Rodgers, Back in the High Life sold millions of copies, spawned four hit singles and won a couple of Grammy Awards. The album was produced by Winwood and Russ Titelman, and an astonishing 17 assistant engineers. The best way to describe the sound is that it sounds sterile & clean. to the point of impotency. Between Winwood, Titelman, the 17 assistant engineers(!) and the bagillion musicians I think they incorporated every thing, and thought, imaginable to craft Back in the High Life. They may have even used a kitchen sink (drummer John Robinson is quite talented).
