Deniece Williams grew up singing in a Pentecostal church, which was strict on the congregation listening only to gospel music. During the late '60s, she was a candy striper in a Chicago hospital. Outside of wanting a 1959 Thunderbird, she had no serious ambitions. With her label, Columbia, uninterested, Williams released the gospel album From the Beginning on Sparrow Records. The album featured the Grammy Award-winning single "They Sa. The same year she also won a Grammy for "I Surrender" and another for "I Believe in You" in 1987. Album: This Is Niecy (1976).
Deniece Williams (born June Deniece Chandler; June 3, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter and producer. Williams has been described as "one of the great soul voices" by the BBC. Williams has won four Grammys with twelve nominations altogether. Born in Gary, Indiana, Williams attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, in the hopes of becoming a registered nurse and an anesthetist, but dropped out after a year and a half.

Appearing just months before their Immediate debut - entitled The Small Faces, just like their first album for Decca - From the Beginning includes early version of "My Way of Giving" and "(Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me," and it reprises songs that were on the 1966 Decca LP ("Sha La La La Lee," "What'cha Gonna Do.
Deniece Williams first began singing at her church, performing as part of their gospel choir. Upon adulthood, Willaims worked several low paying jobs, finding little energy to try her hand at music, which soon changed after being introduced to Stevie Wonder by her cousin. Six months later, Williams flew to Detroit, US for an audition, becoming the successful candidate through her rendition of "Teach Me Tonight. Hits continued throughout the early '80s, moving to a gospel sound in 1987 with "From the Beginning. The album was critically acclaimed, earning Williams a Grammy Award for the single, "They Say," also winning at the prestigious awards ceremony for two further singles, "I Surender" and "I Believe In Yo.
