Barry White's second Love Unlimited Orchestra album drives more carefully down the middle of the road than did its predecessor, Rhapsody in White. Save for the extremely polite "Satin Soul," most of White Gold is disco background instrumental with barely a pulse; the big man also refrains from butting in with the purring pronouncements of love (or horniness) that helped make Rhapsody such a kick.

The Love Unlimited Orchestra, formed by American singer-songwriter Barry White, was a 40-piece string-laden orchestra that served as a backing unit for White and female vocal trio Love Unlimited. From the early 1970s on, they also recorded several singles and albums under their own name. Their biggest hit single was 1973's instrumental vinyl disc, "Love's Theme". The track, written by Barry White, went to No. 1 for one week in the . and No. 10 in the UK Singles Chart.

Even though the Love Unlimited Orchestra was originally assembled to provide instrumentation for Barry White's Love Unlimited side project, the band was a heavy chart hitter for four years. White Gold is the band's third 1974 release and, though it cannot eclipse their debut, Rhapsody in White, still it would take them through the beginning of 1976. White pulls out the tried-and-true formula across this album, which is loaded with the expected orchestral numbers - heavy on the strings, of course, and interspersed with White's own vocal nuggets. Satin Soul" was the only track to flip off the album and onto the singles chart, and it is relatively sweet, but the real gem in this album comes one track later. Always Thinking of You," penned by Ray Parker, J. is a much stronger song. It's rich, full of life, and has a great groove.
