Live at San Quentin is a 1990 live album by blues guitarist B. B. King performed at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California. King Intro" (Riley King). Let the Good Times Roll" (Sam Theard, Fleecie Moore). Every Day I Have the Blues" (Memphis Slim). Whole Lotta Loving" (Jules Bihari, Riley King). Sweet Little Angel" (Riley King, Jules Taub). Never Make a Move Too Soon" (Stix Hooper, Will Jennings). Into the Night" (Ira Newborn).

Unlike Johnny Cash's smirking irony on his album recorded at the same facility in 1969, where you can sense Cash's disdain for the captors is just as strong as the inmates', King seems to be totally oblivious to the fact that these are prisoners being held against their will. And that's the problem with this competent, if unremarkable, record: King is merely going through the motions.

Bobby Bland and B. King Together Again. Now Appearing at Ole Miss. Why I Sing the Blues.

Cut at San Quentin State Prison in 1969 (the year after the legendary At Folsom Prison album), this is outlaw country. Cash’s raw-boned rumble (with vital assistance from rockabilly hero Carl Perkins on guitar and, of course, June Carter) gains in excitement as he feeds off the energy of his captive audience. He practically incites a riot with prison-reform anthem San Quentin, but it’s the uproarious, rough-and-tumble A Boy Named Sue that really nails this album’s iconic status.
