The opening song to arguably Bob Marley’s finest album, Lively Up Yourself is a perfect opener. The song is built upon a laid-back reggae beat, to which Marley composes a great, original melody and lyrics that never get too deep or wordy – it’s a good-time song done extremely well. Indeed, it’s a song which is hard to analyse – lyrically, it’s nothing much more than the title phrase, and the gorgeous chorus of Lively up yourself/And don’t be no drag and musically, it’s simple and doesn’t stretch the band or Marley too much.
